Map Quilts

A recent post from Chairwoman Ma on our facebook page got me thinking about how quilts are inspired. The images of photographer Michael Wolf of the high density housing in Hong Kong are linear, graphic and fascinating.
I have been enthralled by map quilts for some time - even having a print out of fellow Canadian Ian Hundley's dark map pinned up for inspiration.

UK based Alicia Merritt has produced a fabulous series of map quilts. These can be seen at her website's gallery.
If a map quilt is giving you the "quilt itches" (that feeling when you just want to make a quilt...) here is a tutorial for one type of map quilt.

Mystery 2012

These six quilts were made (started at least!) at the QGI Retreat 2012. Thanks to Yvonne McKee for this Mystery that produced swirling stars in a "chainy" setting.
Thanks to those members who brought in their BIG completed mysteries.

The original cutting instructions are here. .. they start with
"Part of the Mystery Challenge this year is to have you make the quilt from your stash – which let’s face it most of us have, and are always saying I must use it up. Well here is your chance.
This is a truly stunning quilt. I have made mine using strong earthy colours on a dark cream/tan background."
