Help to make a Charity Quilt for "Under my Bed" for Barnardos

We have been asked by the producers of the stage show "Under my Bed"  to make a quilt. This oversized covering will appear on stage in the January 2014 production at the Smock Alley Theatre in Dublin. On your behalf, we have accepted the challenge! The final quilt will be auctioned after the production, with all proceeds from both the auction and the stage show going to Barnardos. We'd like to have it finished in time for a press release photo shoot in early November.

The producers have asked for a "colourful" finished product and it will be used on stage as a cover for an oversized bed. We are asking for 12 inch finished (12 1/2 inch with seam allowances included) square in square blocks. Blocks should be posted to Jane Winters or dropped in to any committee member. Email us if you need her address (

The exact size of the centre square isn't too important. If you want to use up jelly rolls then make multiple rounds of the squares. Let's go for colour and contrast, avoiding Christmas or baby fabrics. The overall effect should be like this quilt, (although we don't have to use this colour scheme):

We are still waiting for the final dimensions of the finished quilt, so aren't quite sure how many squares we will need. As a start, lets go for a 9 by 9 setting of the blocks, meaning 81 blocks need to be made. Moya Geraghty has offered to quilt the finished monster- thank you Moya.
Any questions? - drop us a line or leave a comment.

  2. we will actually need even more blocks -- 12 by 12 = 144 blocks should give us the size we need! Let's get it pieced in September, quilted in October and into the photo shoot in November.
